How Does A
Having sex isn't always as straightforward as we would like and many men face the problem of either a rapid or delayed ejaculation. A rapid or delayed ejaculation can cause embarrassment and frustration for both partners in the sexual relationship. To better understand how a rapid or delayed ejaculation occurs we must first look at the mechanics and how an ejaculation evolves. Ejaculation is, usually, the end result of sexual stimulation when semen is ejected from the penis. This occurs during two phases known as emission and ejaculation proper.
Emission
This phase of ejaculation is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system and is also referred to as “the point of no return” or the point of ejaculatory inevitability.
Ejaculation
It is at this point that the semen gets ejected through the urethra along with rhythmic contractions. The rhythmic contractions are all part of the male orgasm which typically lasts about 17 seconds. The above is the ideal scenario but unfortunately some men have difficulties. The two main problems are rapid or delayed ejaculation .
Rapid
The reassuring news in this instance is that statistics show that anywhere from 20% to 40% of all men will experience rapid ejaculation. Non the less rapid ejaculation can be embarrassing and cause much disappointment within a committed sexual relationship, especially if it is something that occurs frequently.
But there are ways that rapid ejaculation can be avoided. Firstly, lets be clear about what rapid ejaculation is. It is quite simply when a man ejaculates before he is ready. But, all men have varying ideas on how long an erection should be sustained prior to ejaculation so perhaps it is better to say that rapid ejaculation is when ejaculation takes place shortly after the first penetration.
The reasons behind rapid ejaculation can be either of a medical or emotional nature. It has to be said that there are rarely physical reasons such as diseases that cause rapid ejaculation but there are mental or emotional issues that can be a problem such as overexcitement, excess stimulation and inexperience. There are steps that can be taken to avoid rapid ejaculation such as ejaculating prior to having a sexual encounter with a partner. The reason being, a second ejaculation should take longer than the first. Try shallow penetration, especially at the beginning as this will provide less stimulation for the man and interestingly this will provide more stimulation for the woman so everyone is a winner.
Delayed
Delayed ejaculation can be just as frustrating and embarrassing as rapid ejaculation. To experience a delayed ejaculation means that a man cannot ejaculate, or it takes 30 minutes or even longer for him to do so. There are some medical conditions that can cause delayed ejaculation such as, neurological diseases, excessive use of alcohol, drug abuse, and trauma to the pelvic nerves but most commonly the problem is psychological. Psychological problems can come from concern about performance or religious or cultural taboos. There may also be a psychological problem caused through masturbation patterns for instance, a man who masturbates regularly with a fast motion may find it difficult to climax through the slower process of intercourse.
The best way to discern whether the problem is medical or psychological is to have a physical or neurological exam. Once the underlying cause has been discovered then treatment can be pursued. This treatment could include, sessions with a sex therapist, the discontinuing of the use of alcohol or drugs and if the condition is cause by side effects of medication, changing that medication. Any man concerned about either rapid or delayed ejaculation should not feel embarrassed and if in a committed sexual relationship should discuss the issues with his partner.
