An addiction is when an activity, such as watching something, using a substance, or doing something, becomes a self-destructive and negatively affects your general behavior. The effect of a certain addiction usually disrupts your normal functioning capacity, may it be as an employee, parent, child, student, boss, or an athlete. Sexual addiction, as the term states, is when one becomes addicted to sex. It may be an addiction to the act of sexual intercourse or to other acts relating to sex such as masturbation, pornography, voyeurism, prostitution, and promiscuity. Often times, the sexual addiction hinders the person from doing their duties and fulfilling their responsibilities. Sometimes, the opposite happens. The person with a sexual addiction is only able to fulfill their responsibilities and duties once they are able to satisfy their addiction.
There are a vast number of possibilities for causes of sexual addiction. Early trauma or abuse during childhood, especially when trauma is sexual, may cause this addiction. The child may have learned that sex was the only way to feel loved or important to someone else, since it was possible the earlier trauma showed this to the child. This belief is later on carried out in life. For some, this develops due to the early exposure of sexual materials such as different kinds of pornography. They become obsessed over these that they forget that a relationship with another person is not only about sex but has social aspects also.
A person with a sexual addiction usually has obsessive thoughts and actions of a sexual act. These may include dating compulsively or through online sites and personal advertisements; thinking about sex all the time; watching pornography consistently, stimulating oneself compulsively; and having different sexual partners at one time. Other symptoms may include watching others have sex or voyeurism, engaging in prostitution acts such as trading sex for money or gifts, using prostitutes, and participating in unsafe sex, exhibitionism, and other sexual practices that may cause harm to the self. Some sex addicts use sex as a way to medicate themselves from depression, stress, pain, and even problem with sleep.
Aside from not being able to fulfill their responsibilities at work, at home, or in school, there are many other dangers involved in a sex addict’s life. There are health dangers such as contracting an STD, AIDS, or HIV. This can also lead to problems with the law ranging from soliciting a prostitute, to sexual harassment, and even to rape. Sexual addiction can affect the addict’s relationships such as the loss of a spouse due to divorce and estrangement from parents or children. Other dangers may also be encountered like the loss of a job, financial problems, and unwanted pregnancies.
Luckily, there is a way to treat sexual addiction. The most common treatment is to go through a 12-step program similar to the of the Alcoholics Anonymous program. There are a number of support groups for sex addicts available. It is also beneficial to seek counseling and help from professional therapists.
